Encouragement from the Word

Encouragement from the Word

The Character of God

Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;  who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.

Main points from Sunday's Sermon

Understanding God’s Plan of Redemption

Jonah 4

What role do we have in God’s plan of redemption?

1. We are to be lights (witnesses/representives/influences for the kingdom of God)

    A.  To the unsaved

Matt 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

    B.  To the saved

1 Thess 5:4-6, 11 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. ... Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

2.  We are to grow in our sanctification (growing in our obedience/holiness)

1 Peter 1:14-16  As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy      yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."

Rom 8:28-29  And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those  whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;.

3.  We are to pray for the salvation of all people

1 Timothy 2:1-4, 8   First of all, then, I urge that entreaties [and] prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in  authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,  who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. ... Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
